Turning cooking oil into biodiesel.

Overview

Expé2 had the opportunity to discuss with Tim Waterfield, manager of the Social Enterprise Naga Earth.
Located in the highly touristic city of Siem Reap, Naga Earth leads 6 environmentally friendly and social projects in order to improve people’s life.

Initially created as an NGO, Naga Earth’s first project was the conversion of waste cooking oil into biodiesel. This fuel emits less carbon dioxide than regular fuel and is also much safer for the health. By selling it at the same price as regular diesel, this product got into the market and made the company financially sustainable.
The byproduct created by the chemical process, glycerin, is turned into soap, and will soon be included in the production of vegan leather. The soap is sold in refillable containers in order to save plastic!
This is also linked to a community hygiene program: free distribution of soap to Cambodian NGOs and hygiene training courses thanks to sponsor donations. .

Finally, Naga Earth also recycles plastic and glass to reduce Cambodia’s dependance to neighbor countries!
