Aquaponics and Thai cooking.
What is the link between an episode of The Bachelor and sustainable development? The answer to this question can be found at Island Organics on the island of Koh Samui, located in southern Thailand. It is here that Cameron and his wife Lat have set up an amazing organic garden. “When we bought the land seven years ago, it was sand. The next three years were spent making it fertile ground,” Cameron explains.
To do this, Cameron and Lat created their own compost and vermicompost, which they used to create a new layer of brown and fertile soil.
Today, the couple cultivates more than 70 species of herbs, fruits and vegetables. They have also set up a high-performance aquaponics system. This includes 1000 Tilapias, fish particularly well adapted to aquaculture, for the same number of crops.
Everything on their property – personally designed by the couple from A to Z – is thought of in a responsible and ecological way, from compost to chilli, a natural insect repellent.
The couple shares their knowledge and passion during cooking sessions that can accommodate up to 30 participants at a time. You won’t find any more circular cooking classes: the equipment is powered by biogas produced by a digester on the farm, the vegetables come from the garden and are harvested by the customers just before cooking them. .
Cameron and Lat welcome any holidaymaker who is curious to discover the local culinary art in a different way – from tourists to even sometimes participants from television shows … !
